Master’s degree in Art History
Graduate-level Teaching Certificate
8 years of training and teaching experience in a commercial English language school

My background combines art, education and English language teaching. Alongside my formal qualifications, eight years working within a commercial language school gave me extensive practical ELT training and classroom experience.

That combination now informs my independent work at Blue Noun, where I bring together language teaching, coaching, creativity and experiential learning.

Blue Noun Courses & Language Support

Blue Noun offers different kinds of English support because not everyone needs another conventional English course.

Many adults who come to Blue Noun have already spent years learning English. They have studied grammar, collected vocabulary, completed exercises and worked through coursebooks — often successfully.

But language development needs more than input.

At Blue Noun, I think about English through Four Strands: learning, practising, using and experiencing the language. Many long-term learners have invested heavily in learning — particularly grammar and vocabulary — without having anything like the same amount of time to practise, use and experience their English.

When those strands become unbalanced, it is easy to conclude “I need more English” when what you may actually need is to do something different with the English you already have.

Our Review & Revive online offer helps you work out where you are now. We look at your English-learning history, your Four Strands, what you need English for and what you have already tried, then identify a useful next step. That might be teaching, coaching, pronunciation work, more speaking opportunities, immersion — or something else entirely.

For some people, the next step is more substantial: breaking old language-learning habits by changing the conditions completely.

Blue Noun’s English immersion holidays in Scotland create those different conditions. English moves out of the conventional classroom and into real life: conversation, culture, activities, workshops, meals, journeys and everyday encounters. You have sustained time to practise, use and experience your English, with expert language support woven through the holiday.

You don’t need to fix everything at once.

Sometimes you need to understand which strand needs attention next. Sometimes you need to stop adding more English knowledge and start discovering what the English you already have can do.

I think that final sentence is especially important. It connects Four Strands → R&R → holidays in one coherent Blue Noun philosophy rather than making the page sound like a catalogue of two products.

Trial lesson policy
I don’t offer trial lessons.

For Blue Noun English holidays, we arrange a short Zoom call before your holiday to make sure we’re a good match. It’s also an opportunity to talk about your English, what you want from the experience, and any questions you have before booking.

Review & Revive is itself a standalone consultation, so there is no trial session required.
Prices
I don’t offer trial lessons, but I do offer a paid Review & Revive session: an independent English-learning review designed to help you understand what your English needs next.

We look at your learning history, your balance across the Four Strands — learning, practising, using and experiencing English — and where a carefully chosen intervention could make the biggest difference. The answer might be lessons, coaching, pronunciation work, more real-world English practice, immersion, or something else.

For Blue Noun English holidays, I also offer a free Zoom call before booking. This isn’t a trial lesson; it’s a relaxed conversation to make sure Blue Noun and the holiday are a good match for you.

Testimonials

Review
From the very first moment, I’ve loved the warm atmosphere and Ruth's passionate way of inspiring enthusiasm for the English language. Her innovative approach of bringing English to life in a vibrant and motivating way gives me a whole new feeling for the language.

The teaching methods are varied and practice-oriented, with real life experiences and opportunities to use the language in everyday situations and participate in the local environment. I feel like I’m not only improving my language skills, but also meeting great people and getting to know Scottish culture and way of life up close – which is exactly what I was looking for!
